'He hasn't killed anyone' - NPP supporters on Wontumi's 20-year sentence

Some supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have expressed outrage following the 20-year sentence handed to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Speaking to the media after the sentencing on July 20, 2026, they argued that the prison term was excessive.

Others questioned if the sentence reflected the nature of the offence.

“Chairman Wontumi hasn’t killed anyone. 20 years is too much. Even those who have been accused of theft are not handed such a sentence, all this is political persecution, the government should know that it won't be in power forever one supporter stated.

The reactions come after the Accra High Court found Wontumi guilty on charges related to illegal mining activities on the Samreboi concession in the Western Region.

Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, who presided over the Criminal Division of the High Court also imposed a fine of 10,000 penalty units, equivalent to GH¢120,000, with a default sentence of three years' imprisonment if the fine is not paid.

The case centred on allegations that Wontumi and Akonta Mining Limited assigned mineral rights without the required approval and facilitated unlicensed mining operations, contrary to the Minerals and Mining Act.
