Another change of curriculum? How much consultation went into this? What was the input from the real stakeholders?

Is the minister of education aware that no new text books were supplied for most of the subjects? And that even the few text books that were introduced were of poor standard, with many grammatical, typographical and technical mistakes? Are any new text books going to be provided for this latest curriculum?

Are there any plans in place to educate teachers and educators well on this new curriculum before it is introduced? The last one did not make provision for any such pre-training.

Most of all, are teachers going to receive proper teaching materials that would make the new curriculum fit for purpose? Most schools still struggle to get ordinary chalk on daily basis. Teaching technology without the requisite tools amounts to nothing!

The last time I checked, most of the Polytechnics which were turned into Technical Universities overnight still stuff their libraries with textbooks whose latest editions were 1979 or 1982! Of the ten lathes that were in Anafo's workshop in 1980, only two are in intermittent operation.

Woaa look! On 3rd July, GES and the Education ministry announced that the WAEC BECE results would be released on the 15th of July - that was, in another 12 days. Then followed the announcements of parallel schedules leading to a set date for SSS1 students to report to their new schools for the commencement of the next academic year. One would suppose that the authorities would have done due diligence in astute planning before coming out with such time schedules.

Those of us who have lived through the mess of everything valuable in our beloved country had our doubts about the sincerity of those announcements, but kept our cool, hoping that we would be proved wrong for the first time for doubting the integrity of our leaders.

In less than no time, 15th July came to pass smoothly, without a whisper from the authorities about the farce of their July 3rd misinformation, and the consequences therefrom. Five days after the July 15th no show, the whole Minister of Education then comes back to the media and announce that the BECE results would be released within a further ten days.

Do these people have no dignity? Aren't stakeholders entitled to be told why the first pronouncement failed to be fulfilled? Or do they just take us for granted, knowing all too well that good or bad, the populace would congratulate them for their performance, despite the mess they continue to bring to bear on us all?

To add insult to abuse, the same minister opens his uncouth mouth to declare that in his wisdom, it is time a new curriculum is introduced into our wobbly education system. Ironically, the minister intends to introduce AI education into our educational system, starting with schools under trees, schools with one teacher in charge of a whole primary school from Basic 1 to Basic 6, not counting nursery and KG classes, schools which go on break whenever it rains even lightly the previous night, and worse of all, in a system where over 90% of schools do not have access to electricity. I bet most schools are still using stones to demonstrate the movement of a computer mouse. And the minister hopes to be applauded for the intention to introduce proper technology into our education system.

One wonders whether as usual, the new government is just trying to square up with the policy of Free Education the previous government is still collecting accolades for. The best this new curriculum will achieve would probably be that a few schools in affluent communities such as at the ministries in Accra, and also in the university precincts around the big cities, would be ready to implement such white horse, and to hell with what happens in the majority of schools across the country!

Unless the minister can prove otherwise, this is probably a badly thought out policy which the minister would do well to put brakes on for now and go back to the drawing board and rethink it. This is in no way a nay-sayers' wish like the opposition put up against the introduction of the free SSS policy by some politicians ten years ago, on grounds that "it will not work"! Far from that. The situation with this policy about new curriculum is that this is an ill thought out decision. The last introduction of a new curriculum has not had time to be fully implemented and for it to be fully accessed for its successes and failures. For that matter, any new curriculum that is being introduced would not gain any input from the success or otherwise of the last policy. The new one could thus end up picking up strands from the last one, which may have failed to live to their expectations, thus causing the state unnecessary waste of scarce resources!
