There are mixed reactions on social media following the 20-year sentencing of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

In a judgment delivered on Monday, July 20, 2026, the Criminal Court 4 Division of the High Court, presided over by Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, ruled against him on all charges.

The sentences are to run concurrently.

The ruling has sparked intense debate online.

While some users argue that the punishment is too harsh, others insist that Wontumi deserves the sentence and its consequences.

On X, reactions have been sharply divided, with sympathisers expressing shock and disappointment, while critics have welcomed the ruling as a necessary step in upholding justice.

"Ei. What at all did he do?" one user wrote.

Another concerned user wrote: "It's ironic how everyone is blaming the NDC. The NPP knows that if they don't imprison Chairman Wontumi, there's a high chance he'll be re-elected as chairman. The government has done its part, but honestly, I think some NPP members also want him jailed for 20 years."

"A GH¢120k fine vs. a 20-year prison term for Chairman Wontumi? 😲 There is absolutely no logical correlation or proportionality to this extreme sentencing," one other user said.

@theghanaweb "Chairman Wontumi's standing in society and the businesses he has established should be taken into consideration by the court. At a time when unemployment remains a major challenge, the broader implications of such a decision, including its impact on jobs, should also be weighed." — Bernard Owiredu Donkor #ghanaweb #ghanawebtv ♬ original sound - GhanaWeb
