Brussels Airlines flight returns safely to Accra after technical fault

A Brussels Airlines flight from Accra to Lomé returned safely to Accra International Airport (AIA) on Monday evening after the crew detected a technical fault shortly after takeoff, according to a statement from the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).

The aircraft, operating as Flight SN278, departed Accra at 6:06 p.m. but experienced a technical issue during the flight.

The flight crew subsequently decided to return to Accra as a precautionary safety measure, landing safely at 6:18 p.m.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, the GCAA commended the crew for adhering to established safety procedures, noting that the safety of passengers and crew remains its highest priority.

The Authority said the technical issue that led to the aircraft’s return is being investigated by Brussels Airlines in line with established aviation safety procedures and under the oversight of the GCAA.

It, however, did not disclose the nature of the technical fault.

Following the incident, Brussels Airlines cancelled Flight SN278. The GCAA said affected passengers are being assisted by airline officials in accordance with the Ghana Civil Aviation (Economic) Directives.
