Man who stole police armoured vehicle jailed for one month

A Kwadaso Circuit Court in Kumasi has sentenced a 26-year-old unemployed man to one month's imprisonment after he admitted attempting to steal a police armoured vehicle at Nkawie in the Ashanti Region.

The convict, Ebenezer Frimpong, a native of Antwi Agyeikrom in the Atwima Mponua District, changed his plea from not guilty to guilty when he appeared before the court on Tuesday, July 21, 2026.

According to a report by dennislawnews.com published on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, the court, presided over by His Honour Jephtha Appau, convicted Frimpong on his own plea after a psychiatric report from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital declared him fit to stand trial.

After the psychiatric report was read in court, Frimpong informed the judge that he wished to change his plea from not guilty to guilty. The judge asked whether he understood the consequences of his decision, and he responded in the affirmative.

According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on April 14, 2026, when General Lance Corporal Joshua Denkyi was driving a police armoured vehicle with registration number GP 1131 to a workshop for servicing.

The prosecution said the officer parked near the Nkawie Market after developing a stomach upset and stepped out to buy medicine from a nearby pharmacy, leaving the vehicle unattended.

Moments later, he allegedly saw Frimpong driving the armoured vehicle onto the Nkawie-Abuakwa-Kumasi road. An alarm was raised, and with the assistance of officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), Frimpong was arrested near Mim, close to Abuakwa, and the vehicle was recovered.

Police Prosecutor ASP Albert Asagre urged the court to sentence the accused after he admitted to the offence.

In delivering the sentence, His Honour Jephtha Appau said the court took into account Frimpong's age and the fact that he did not waste the court's time after pleading guilty.

Frimpong was consequently sentenced to one month's imprisonment.

The incident first came to light after the Ghana Police Service announced Frimpong's arrest on April 16, 2026.
