Ghana's club ecosystem has regressed - Brian Wesaala

Founder and President of the Football Foundation for Africa (FFA), Brian Wesaala, has expressed concern over the decline of Ghana's domestic club football, insisting that the country's once-dominant clubs have lost their continental appeal despite Ghana's continued production of world-class players.

Speaking on the state of African football in an interview with Sporty FM shared on social media on July 21, 2026, Wesaala said Ghana remains one of the continent's most admired football nations, having produced legends such as Anthony Yeboah and Abedi Pele, while continuing to nurture stars like Mohammed Kudus.

However, he believes the country's club football ecosystem has regressed significantly over the years.

"I look at a country like Ghana. I've admired Ghana for the longest time, from the days of Anthony Yeboah and Abedi Pele to now with players like Kudus. But something has been lost along the way," Wesaala said.

"I no longer hear about Asante Kotoko or Hearts of Oak in Kenya because the club ecosystem in Ghana has kind of regressed, even as Ghana continues to produce world stars."

According to him, strengthening governance within football institutions is essential to reversing the decline and unlocking greater financial opportunities for the game.

"We really need to work on the governance systems and the governance strength of our football organisations in order for us to benefit from the money FIFA is generating," he noted.

Wesaala added that improved governance would also attract long-term investment from the private sector, creating a sustainable football economy.

"More importantly, we need to bring in more money, especially from local setups. Our corporate institutions and long-term investors need to find strong enough structures to invest in if we are to create a viable football economy in Ghana.”
