Augustine Boakye prioritises assists over goals as he reflects on football journey

Black Stars and Saint-Étienne midfielder Augustine Boakye says he takes greater satisfaction in creating goals for his teammates than scoring himself, insisting that a striker's confidence is crucial to a team's success.

Speaking in an interview on Beyond the Whistle on July 21, 2026, the Ghana international explained that while he is always ready to score when the opportunity arises, his first instinct is to provide assists for his forwards.

"I prefer to give an assist to my strikers. When the striker scores, I think the team keeps moving because he's the main man. That's his job. When he scores, it boosts the morale of the team, but when he doesn't score, it brings everyone down. If I have the chance to score, why not?" Boakye said.

The 24-year-old also revealed that football was the only career he ever envisioned for himself, saying he never considered any other profession while growing up.

"I had only football. No other dream, no other job, no other talent, nothing. Even when I was in school, it was only football. I was football-minded," he added.

Boakye further credited the sport with transforming his life, saying football has opened doors and earned him respect wherever he goes.

"It has helped me a lot. It has made life a little bit easier for me because there are some places you go where they don't treat you as a normal guy who does a normal job. They treat you professionally," he said.
