Recent arrests under Mahama not a coincidence but a ploy to weaken us' - NPP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has alleged that the recent arrests of some of its members form part of a deliberate attempt by the Mahama-led government to intimidate and weaken the opposition.

The allegation was contained in a statement issued on July 23, 2026, and signed by the party's Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah.

According to the NPP, the increasing number of arrests involving opposition members suggests a pattern rather than isolated incidents.

"The arrests of opposition members by the John Mahama Administration are becoming far too frequent. This does not appear to be a coincidence but rather part of a broader effort to harass and weaken opposition to the government. A clear pattern has emerged," the statement said.

The party called on President John Dramani Mahama to discourage what it described as the arrest and harassment of its members, while urging party supporters to remain calm, disciplined and focused on issues affecting Ghanaians.

The NPP further accused the government of using the arrests to divert public attention from challenges facing the country.

"We are dealing with a government that appears eager to seize on the slightest opportunity to divert public attention from its abysmal performance thus far," the statement added.

The party argued that the government's attention should instead be directed towards addressing issues such as the rising cost of living, youth unemployment, concerns over judicial independence, governance and the implementation of its manifesto promises.

According to the NPP, these are the issues that matter most to Ghanaians and should remain the focus of national discourse.

The party also cautioned its members against resorting to insults or inflammatory rhetoric, saying such conduct would undermine its message and shift attention away from what it considers the government's shortcomings.

Instead, it urged members to rely on facts, evidence and disciplined advocacy as they hold the government accountable.

"Facts, evidence, and disciplined advocacy remain our strongest weapons. Let us stay focused on holding the John Mahama Administration accountable and on speaking for the millions of Ghanaians who expect and deserve better performance from the government," the statement said.
