For the first time in Ghana’s history, we are seeing political imprisonment – Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has stated that recent legal actions involving NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, and TikToker Camila Alhassan point to what he described as political persecution.

Addressing Parliament after the presentation of the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review, Afenyo-Markin argued that the country was witnessing a worrying trend.

“What we are experiencing in this country is persecution, persecution, persecution. For the first time, we are seeing political imprisonment,” he said.

He cited Chairman Wontumi’s conviction and the case involving Camila Alhassan as examples of what he believes is the use of state institutions against political opponents.

The Minority Leader also called for what he described as the release of “political prisoners” and insisted that opposition lawmakers would continue to scrutinise the government’s actions.

“You can decide to imprison every MP. It will not shut us down. We will criticise you. We will hold your feet to account,” he said.
