'His entire body was shaking’ – Paul Yandoh recounts visit to Wontumi in prison

The Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Yandoh, has recounted his visit to Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, at Nsawam Prison.

Speaking in a video sighted by GhanaWeb on July 25, 2026, Yandoh said he joined constituency chairmen, regional executives and staff of Wontumi Multimedia to visit the politician on Friday, July 24, 2026.

According to him, the group had to comply with strict prison protocols before they were allowed to see Wontumi.

"I was really saddened.... There are strict protocols to observe before seeing an inmate. Even the food we took along, we were made to taste. When we finally saw Chairman Wontumi, his entire body was shaking," Yandoh said.

He further claimed that prison officials instruct the visitors not to cry when they visit inmates.

"They told us no crying," he stated.

Yandoh also maintained that Wontumi was not involved in illegal mining activities and accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of treating him unfairly.

"The NDC has done a great disservice to Wontumi. He was not involved in galamsey," he alleged.

Wontumi was sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment with hard labour by an Accra High Court on July 20, 2026, after being convicted on charges related to illegal mining operations involving Akonta Mining Limited in the Samreboi case.

He was also fined 10,000 penalty units, equivalent to GH¢120,000, with a three-year default prison term if the fine is not paid.

Wontumi consistently denied any wrongdoing throughout the trial.

Meanwhile, the NPP has announced that it will file an appeal to contest the decision of the court.
