If an individual is prosecuted and convicted under laws of general application—such as those against illegal mining—the label "political prisoner" is generally not applicable simply because they belong to an opposition party. If a political party publicly opposes illegal mining (galamsey), then it is reasonable to ask why it would object to the enforcement of those laws in a particular case. It is also fair to note that many people accused or convicted of illegal mining who lack political influence or wealth have received little public attention, raising questions about whether public outrage is being applied consistently

The justice system should prioritize the swift resolution of cases, especially where there is evidence that an accused person may be innocent. Delayed justice affects lives, reputations, families, and livelihoods. Setting clear timelines for criminal trials would help ensure that innocent people are not left waiting for years before they can move on with their lives.

What is difficult to understand is why some criminal cases in Ghana can take as long as six years or more to conclude. Such prolonged delays weaken public confidence in the justice system and can hinder national progress.

Our political culture also needs serious reflection. Too often, politicians appear more focused on defending party interests than serving the people. Many Ghanaians are frustrated by what they see as a lack of accountability and integrity in public office.

When public figures facing serious allegations are defended on national television before the legal process has run its course, it deepens public mistrust. Every accused person deserves a fair trial and the presumption of innocence, but accountability and due process must be allowed to take their course.

God bless our homeland, Ghana.

He was a common criminal, engaged in unlawful activities. I would have thought Atta Kyea, such a knowledgeable lawyer would admit that Wontumi was found guilty based on his statement in court. By the way, what's the difference between a politician and normal Ghanaians? Are we not all politicians who are called upon once in four years to cast our votes? A criminal is a criminal. Crime has no political colours. I listened to Prof. Appiagye who stated categorically that Wontumi's case was never about his political office as Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman. This Atta Akyea guy should be ashamed of himself for trying to Turn the Criminal Court Trial of a Convicted Criminal for serious violations of our criminal laws. What kind of a Lawyer is this one? Is that what he was Taught at Law School.? I hope his law Tutors at Law school are shaking with shame and unbearable disappointment and disbelief.

I heard this guy's submission on the judgement on JoyTV News file and trust me, he is not grounded in law, not a bit. Very shallow thinking and analysis of the judgement. No wonder he left his client, Wontumi to attend the daughter's graduation in the UK. I also understand why he and his kind were against broadening the Law school for more enrollment.

Any Ghanaian who is opposed to Wontumi’s sentence is an enemy of the state and should be categorized as an accomplice to Wontumi and prosecuted. How can some Ghanaians turn a blind eye to the magnitude of damage Wontumi has caused to our forest reserves and our economy system for his own selfish interest. The aftermath of his actions in Sameboi resulted to the recent floods in the area that has never been witnessed by the inhabitants of the area . This illegal mining activity in the country will eventually lead to sink holes all over the affected areas which will cause future building to collapse as residential areas continue to expand in the country. Even the late Sir John who was supposed to oversee the Achimota forest ended up selling the property to his family members and cronies yet we have all remained silent about it. Let’s love our country by protecting the land , our river bodies and our natural resources.
