Netizens react to video of fish kept near refuse dump in Tema Newtown

Social media users have expressed concern over food safety after a viral video showed fish meant for public consumption being kept near a refuse dump in Tema Newtown.

The video, shared by the Buzzstop Boys and sighted by GhanaWeb on July 27, 2026, has generated reactions from netizens, many of whom questioned the safety and hygiene standards surrounding the handling of fish sold to consumers.

Some users expressed worry about possible health risks, calling on relevant authorities to intervene and ensure that food vendors comply with proper storage and hygiene practices.

Several netizens urged the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and other stakeholders responsible for food safety to inspect the area and take steps to protect consumers.

One user linked the incident to the gross irresponsibility of some citizens and described Ghana as being a failed state.

"Is it that it’s kerosene that’s running through the minds of these people? Clearly, Ghana is a failed state. Nothing functions well in this country," he stated.

Another also stated, "I don’t understand the reason why Kwame Nkrumah fought for independence for Ghana.

One also questioned if relevant authorities in the city ensure that food vendors comply with approved food handling and storage practices.

"So don't they have an assemblyman in the community?" he quizzed.

Another social media user also expressed worry over the incident.

"Eiiiii Awurade, we are eating things paaa oooo," she added.

A member of the Buzzstop Boys, in the video, questioned the situation, saying, "What sort of self-destruction are we causing ourselves? Look at us. Fish is being placed close to a refuse dump. Just look at the environment.”

The Buzzstop Boys, a Ghanaian volunteer group founded in July 2023 by civil engineer Heneba Kwadwo Sarfo, are known for their sanitation campaigns, including cleaning public spaces, clearing drains and promoting civic responsibility.

I think I’m Ghanaian coastal towns it’s a taboo to build washrooms at home cos they don’t have it anywhere I’ve been to. And there is always a part of the shore actually dedicated for open deification
