Bismark Aduah, a 28-year-old galamsey worker and coconut seller who is serving a five-month prison term at the Winneba Local Prison, has shared emotional details about his incarceration.
According to Bismark, he was jailed because of his girlfriend, Rebecca Badu, popularly known as Maa Abena, after her mother reported them to the police for allegedly breaking into her home.
He explained that he had been living with Rebecca in Ashaiman, Accra, while her mother did not support their relationship.
However, her father, who had separated from his wife, was supportive of the relationship.
Bismark said he had purchased some kitchen items for Rebecca and she had stored them in her mother's room in the Central Region.
The couple later decided to retrieve the items.
Speaking in an interview with Crime Check TV GH on YouTube, Bismark said that when they arrived at the house, Rebecca's mother was not around.
He therefore broke the lock to gain access and retrieved the items, which they transported to her father's house with the intention to return to Accra afterward.
However, the woman returned, discovered what had happened and reported the matter to the police.
The couple was subsequently arrested, prosecuted and convicted.
According to Bismark, Rebecca was given the option of paying a fine or serving a one-month, two-week prison sentence.
He, on the other hand, was fined GH¢1,560 or, in default, sentenced to five months in prison.
"I was given five months in prison or a fine of GH¢1,560," he said.
Bismark further disclosed that he allowed his family to pay Rebecca's fine because she had been good to them. As a result, she regained her freedom while he remained in custody.

He noted that despite serving more than two months of his sentence, Rebecca has never visited him in prison.
"My sisters paid for her. I have lived with the lady for a long time and she has been doing things for my mother. They didn't want to bail me and leave her, so they paid her fine and left me here.
“The lady hasn't come here before. I was the one doing everything for her so maybe she doesn’t have money," he said.
