South Africa remains Ghana's biggest export market in Africa

South Africa remained Ghana’s largest export destination in Africa in 2025, accounting for 58.7% of the country’s exports to the continent, according to the latest Annual International Merchandise Trade Statistics Report by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).

The report, released on Thursday, July 30, 2026, showed that South Africa received more than half of Ghana’s exports to Africa, making it by far the country’s biggest export market on the continent.

Burkina Faso ranked second, accounting for 16.8% of Ghana’s exports to Africa, followed by Togo with 5.5% and Côte d’Ivoire with 5.2%.

Together, the three countries accounted for more than a quarter of Ghana’s exports to the continent.

Ghana also recorded a higher trade surplus with African countries, which increased from GH¢32.1 billion in 2024 to GH¢34.7 billion in 2025.

The report further revealed that Ghana exported goods to 51 African countries during the year, while imports came from 54 countries, up from 51 in 2024.

On the import side, Nigeria remained Ghana’s largest supplier in Africa, accounting for 31.9% of imports from the continent.

South Africa followed with 11.6%, while Morocco and Togo accounted for 8.3% and 7.9%, respectively.

The report said the figures highlight growing trade opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), as regional markets continue to play a bigger role in Ghana’s trade.

Among Ghana’s neighbouring countries, Burkina Faso remained the country’s biggest export market, with exports valued at GH¢11.8 billion, compared with imports of about GH¢1.3 billion.

The data shows that while Ghana is expanding trade across Africa, its exports remain heavily concentrated in a few key markets, with South Africa maintaining a clear lead.
