This new system of the owner removing the number plate after selling the car is cumbersome and nonsensical. Since the old number plate is already in the system, it's easier to change the information in the system to suit the new owner's details without taking out the number plate from the vehicle completely. This is the normal practice in advanced countries like the UK. However, if the number plate is customised, then the owner can decide whether to take them out or not.

In Germany, you cannot sell a vehicle with the number plate on it. If you do that, the vehicle OFFICIALLY belongs to you !!! Anything that the new owner does with the vehicle, YOU ARE 100% RESPONSIBLE. If you really TRUST the new buyer, you can sell with the number, BUT he may de-register as early as possible.

This is what's done: When the final sales agreement is completed, and the new owner is coming to pick the vehicle, you remove the number plate and without delay, de-register the vehicle at the town/city hall. When you are de-registering the vehicle and register a new one at the same time, you may get the old number. Otherwise, the office takes takes plates: because you are not allowed to keep the number, if it is not in use.

The buyer will certainly come to pick the vehicle (which he has ALREADY registered) with his own number. If he hasn't registered, he may use the services of a garage to attach their RED plate so you'll be able to drive it a few hours.

Conversely, if you know the buyer, you may drive the vehicle to his place and then remove the number plate for subsequent de-registration, noting that a vehicle without a number plate CANNOT BE PARKED outside, neither is it allowed to use a vehicle without a number plate.

Under the new system, you will have to de-register the vehicles when you sell them. After de-registration, the numbers will the be available for others to use. That's how we do it here.

The best solution for car theft is mounting cameras because car theft is also part of this agenda of changing this number plates.As we speak today this Neequaye said dvla would produce their own plates they don't want to work with the private sector terminate their contracts and turn around to give a private man to emboss the whole Ghana number plates. So if I imported a car manufactured in 2016 and I brought it to ghana and register it, there should be an element on 2016 in it. Like in uk, BF16 DGH means car was manufactured in 2016. This will improve road safety because we know the actual age of the car and prices can also be reasonable. People are bringing old cars sometimes over 10 years with penalties and getting registered in the year of arrival. It's misleading. Your point of preventing people flexing with new year etc is too myopic

All unregistered cars are secured in the show rooms or compounds. When you buy one, you could only drive it when it is fully registered with DVLA. On the other hand, you could purchase a used car and drive when you receive your log book of that car. That log book contains the particulars of that CAR, THE PREVIOUS OWNERS ETC. YOU DON'T NEED TO CHANGE THE NUMBER PLATE. However you could only change the number plate when you wish to have a PRIVATE NUMBER
My last question is when you have used a car over 5-6 years, but before selling to Mr X you removed your old plate registered GE 7750 16, what NEW NUMBER WOULD MR X GET? Is it going to be GE 2005 25 tha year i sold it? This is rubbish and it doesn't make sense SIR.

The year will NO longer be part of the number, so if you sold your vehicle with the registration number GE 7750-16 to another person and the person registers the vehicle in 2026, his number will NOT be like GE 1234-26. Since they are removing the year, the number WILL NOT END WITH 26. The year will vanish altogether.
