Asante Kotoko head coach Eric Tinkler has criticised the standard of Ghana’s football pitches, claiming several African countries are ahead of the country when it comes to sports infrastructure.

Tinkler made the comments on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, after Kotoko’s training friendly against Hearts of Lions at the University of Ghana Stadium.

The South African coach believes the condition of pitches is one of the areas Ghana needs to urgently improve, particularly if clubs want to develop possession-based football.

“At this standard the pitches are not okay and that’s something we’re working hard to have a training pitch that is of high standard and high quality. If you create that, the players will enjoy football matches and feel less pressure, he said.

According to Tinkler, Ghana is falling behind a number of African nations that have invested significantly in their playing surfaces and football facilities.

“That is one thing that I feel is lacking in Ghana and needs to be improved.

Other countries, Ivory Coast, Tanzania, Morocco, Egypt, Algeria pitches are exceptional. The standards of the pitches when compared to Ghana is an area that has to improve,” he added.

Tinkler’s assessment comes as Kotoko prepare for the 2026/27 season, with the coach keen to establish an environment that allows his players to train and play under better conditions.
