Parts of Ghana experienced power outages early Thursday, August 20, 2026, following a major fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line that triggered the automatic shutdown of the Akosombo generating units and several thermal plants.

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) in a statement said the fault occurred around 4:30 a.m., prompting the protection system to trip affected facilities to safeguard the National Interconnected Transmission System.

The shutdown caused supply interruptions across parts of the country.

GRIDCo noted that engineers, working with other power sector agencies, quickly isolated the affected line and began restoration efforts.

Power has already been restored to some areas, with work ongoing to reconnect all remaining customers.

“GRIDCo regrets the inconvenience caused by this temporary outage and assures the general public that all relevant technical teams have been fully mobilised,” the company said.

The company added that further updates will be provided as restoration continues.
