Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin is the Minority leader
The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has said his claim that former Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo was removed from office because of a “grand conspiracy” is based on his personal opinion and understanding of events.
Speaking in a recent interview on The KSM Show, Afenyo-Markin said he believes Justice Torkornoo was removed for political reasons and that there was an internal struggle for leadership within the judiciary.
'He's a grand conspirator in Gertrude Torkornoo's sacking' - Afenyo-Markin slams Chief Justice
“My Lady Justice Araba Esaaba Torkornoo, the former chief justice, was hounded out of office for political reasons. I have added that there was a grand conspiracy by her own colleagues against her. I have stated that point,” he said.
Explaining what he meant by “grand conspiracy”, the Minority Leader said he was referring to internal politics and competition for leadership within the judiciary.
“The grand conspiracy here that I'm talking about, is there has always been a turf war,” he stated.
He said some members of the institution could have believed they were more qualified or senior and deserved to become Chief Justice.
“I understand the grand conspiracy within the context of institutional politics where within the institution itself, there was some politics within the institution for leadership and people feeling that, ‘oh, I am senior to this person, I should have been the chief justice. I know this person doesn't deserve to be chief justice’,” he explained.
Afenyo-Markin said his conclusion was based on his assessment of events surrounding Justice Torkornoo’s removal and acknowledged that others could disagree with him.
“I am saying that there was a grand conspiracy to get her out and it was as a result of internal power struggle for the headship of the institution. I am concluding based on all the happenings and the happenings leading to a removal is the evidence. Simplicita. You can disagree with me. That is my opinion of things. That is my understanding of things,” he added.
His comment follows earlier allegations that the current Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, and other Supreme Court judges played a role in the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Speaking in an interview on August 18, 2026, Afenyo-Markin described Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as the “grand conspirator” behind the removal of the former Chief Justice.
According to the Minority Leader, Gertrude Torkornoo’s removal was unjustified, alleging that some members of the Supreme Court were interested in occupying her position.
Why former CJ Torkornoo is trending amid legal vacation debate
“My Lord was part of the grand conspiracy against his predecessor, Gertrude Torkornoo. It was a grand conspiracy. Why should I deny what I know? I know even the Supreme Court judges who conspired against their colleague.
“One day, the full story will be told. I said during our demonstration that I do not see why that woman should not be reinstated when the NPP comes back to power. She has to be reinstated,” he said.
