Aspiring National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has said he would have communicated differently if he were in the position of Ghana Gold Board CEO, Sammy Gyamfi, in his response to Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Thursday, August 20, 2026, he argued that while everyone has their own style of communication, he would not have used the words Sammy Gyamfi used in his address to the nation.

“Well, you see, everyone has a style; I wouldn't use those words, but you see, the issue is that if the Minority Leader had acted using the mechanisms available to him, you would have acted in a much more responsible manner and the response from the other side would have been different,” he said.

Nii Lante Vanderpuye indicated that Sammy Gyamfi's words were harsh and said public figures must be careful about their utterances.

He explained that a person speaking on a public platform is addressing a wider audience and not only the individual they are responding to.

“But when you speak like just an ordinary person, making those effusions, then you are also asking somebody to give you the same measure. Yes, I totally agree [the words were harsh], and I wouldn't want anyone to use that on a platform like that,” he stated.

The former DRIP Coordinator also used the opportunity to apologise on Sammy Gyamfi’s behalf, even though the Ghana Gold Board CEO had not done so himself.

“By my communication background, I wouldn't want the person because you are not speaking to only that person. You are speaking to many other people. So that one, I will sit here and apologise on behalf of Sammy Gyamfi, even if he has not done that,” he said.

He said Sammy Gyamfi considers him a senior but argued that his own experience in political communication would have influenced how he handled the matter.

“He's my boy. He takes me as a senior person, just as you do and I will say, he's not a communicator. He's not a communications expert like me. He hasn't done communication. I have done communication and I know that by register, when you're talking, you are not talking to one person. You are talking to a general number of people,” he added.

However, Nii Lante Vanderpuye also criticised Afenyo-Markin, saying the Minority Leader acted in a manner he did not expect from someone in his position.

“But I'm saying that Afenyo-Markin also irresponsibly acted in a manner unexpected of a minority leader,” he concluded.
