GRIDCo provides update on power restoration after widespread outage

Power supply has been fully restored to all areas affected by the system disturbance that disrupted electricity supply across parts of Ghana on Thursday, August 20, 2026.

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) said the restoration followed coordinated efforts by its engineers and technical teams from across the power sector.

“The Ghana Grid Company LTD. (GRIDCo) wishes to inform the public that power supply to all affected areas has been fully restored following the system disturbance that occurred on Thursday, August 20, 2026,” the company said in a statement.

Why Ghana may continue to experience power outages

GRIDCo further noted that restoration efforts began immediately after the disturbance, with its engineers and other power sector technical teams working to reconnect all affected areas.

“The restoration process commenced immediately with GRIDCo’s engineers and power sector technical teams working diligently to restore supply to all affected areas,” it said.

GRIDCo thanked stakeholders for their cooperation and support during the restoration process and assured the public that it would continue working to improve the reliability of the transmission network.

“GRIDCo will continue to implement measures to strengthen the reliability, stability, and resilience of the transmission network,” it said.

The company also expressed appreciation to the public for their patience and understanding during the disruption.

The latest update follows a system disturbance on August 21, 2026, on the Akosombo-Volta transmission line.

GRIDCo had earlier explained that the fault triggered the automatic tripping of the Akosombo generating units and some thermal generating plants as part of the system’s protection mechanisms, resulting in power outages in some parts of the country.
