Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA) - Yaw Ampofo Ankrah
National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has described the planned Constituency Games as potentially the biggest intervention in Ghana’s sports sector since independence.
Speaking at the Constituency Games Consultative Engagement and Endorsement Forum on Friday August 21, 2026, Ampofo Ankrah said the initiative was designed to reach every constituency and community across all regions of Ghana.
“I think this is going to be the greatest input or intervention in Ghana’s cause that we’ve seen since independence,” he said.
He emphasised the nationwide scope of the programme, noting that the initiative would provide opportunities for communities across the country to participate in organised sporting activities.
According to him, the initiative would help move sports development beyond major urban centres and create a broader platform for young people with sporting potential to be identified and nurtured.
He said the programme could also help strengthen the grassroots sports structure by giving communities a regular platform to participate in competitive sports.
Ampofo Ankrah noted that many talented young people across the country lacked access to organised competitions and structured opportunities to develop their abilities.
He said the Constituency Games could help bridge that gap by bringing organised sporting activities closer to communities and encouraging more young people to participate.
He added that the programme had the potential to contribute to the development of Ghana’s national teams by creating a wider pool from which sporting talents could be identified.
Ampofo Ankrah also appealed to media practitioners to take ownership of the initiative by supporting its promotion and contributing ideas that could help improve its implementation.
“It’s for you, my dear media colleagues. Let’s hold it, let’s embrace it, and let’s push it to the next level,” he urged.
He said the consultative forum was also intended to give members of the media an opportunity to share their views, ask questions and highlight issues they believed required further attention.

The NSA Director-General stressed the importance of the media to the success of the programme, assuring journalists that their role in the development of the Constituency Games would not be taken for granted.
He said sustained media coverage would be important in generating public interest, encouraging participation and highlighting emerging talents from different constituencies.
The Constituency Games are being positioned as a grassroots sports initiative aimed at expanding participation and creating opportunities for sporting talent to emerge from communities across Ghana.
The programme is expected to provide a platform for young people to compete at the constituency level while strengthening community participation in sports.
Beyond talent development, the initiative is also expected to promote physical fitness, discipline, teamwork and social cohesion among participants.
The organisers are therefore engaging key stakeholders, including the media, to gather input and build broader support for the implementation of the programme.
