'If we liked what we saw, we wouldn't have voted them out' - Methodist Bishop

The Presiding Bishop of The Methodist Church Ghana, Most Rev Prof Johnson Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu, has urged the government to fulfil its campaign promises to Ghanaians, stressing that citizens expect to see concrete results from the commitments made before the elections.

He said the government should not rely on the shortcomings of previous administrations to explain current challenges, arguing that voters elected it to provide a new direction based on the promises it made during the election campaign.

“If we liked what we saw, we wouldn't have voted them out. So, there’s no point in making any reference. You promised that you would do new things, so we expect that that will be done,” he said.

Most Rev Prof Asamoah-Gyadu made the remarks when he interacted with journalists on the sidelines of the 52nd Conference of The Methodist Church Ghana at St Paul Cathedral in Tema on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, according to Graphic Online report.

He acknowledged that political leaders could point to challenges inherited from previous administrations but cautioned that such explanations should not become an excuse for failing to deliver on new commitments.

The Presiding Bishop also highlighted the role of the Church in supporting government efforts to address social and economic challenges, particularly youth unemployment.

He cited the Church’s entrepreneurship programme, which provides young people with support such as funding, workspace, capital, tools and other resources to establish and sustain businesses.

According to him, although governments often make commitments to create jobs for young people, the state cannot meet every need on its own.

“The government promises a lot. If you follow the politics of the last few years, for example, the government promised to give employment to a lot of young people. I am sure the government does, but it can’t do everything. And that’s where the Church comes in,” he said.
