Akufo-Addo terminated my appointment as MCE without any explanation - Miracles Aboagye

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, has disclosed that in 2020, then-President Nana Akufo-Addo terminated his appointment as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Akuapem North without giving him any explanation.

Speaking at the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) ‘Tell Your Story’ event at the University of Ghana, Dennis Miracles Aboagye said his appointment was terminated three months before the 2020 general election, at a time when he had been actively mobilising young people in the municipality to register ahead of the polls.

According to him, the incident happened on the final day of the Electoral Commission’s voter registration exercise. He said he had spent the day moving around the municipality with young people to encourage residents to register.

After the mobilisation exercise, he said he returned to his office to pick up some documents. However, while climbing the stairs to his office at about 5 p.m., he received a text message from the then Minister of Local Government informing him that the President had terminated his appointment.

“In August 2020, three months to the election as Municipal Chief Executive for Akuapem North, I was neck-deep in the NPP coming to power in 2016. I was the youth leader, which was the reason I got the role. I think on the last day of the Electoral Commission’s registration, I had gone around with the young people in the area to mobilise people to go and register.

“I was climbing to my office around 5 p.m. to go and pick some documents when I got a text message from the Minister of Local Government saying, ‘The President has terminated your appointment,’” he shared.

The former Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCCoD) said he was confused by the message because, according to him, there had been no incident or development that he believed could have triggered the termination of his appointment.

“I was confused. There was no incident; there was nothing. By the time I descended the stairs, it was all over the news. I was getting phone calls. Then, within 30 minutes, my replacement had also been announced,” he noted.

Recounting how he reacted to the development, Miracles Aboagye said he left the premises quietly and went to find a secluded place to process what had happened.

“So, I walked slowly. I didn’t drive my car, and I went to sit in a very silent place,” he said.

Dennis Miracles Aboagye said the experience taught him that setbacks and challenges are part of the journey to achieving greater things in life.

He said people who aspire to attain greatness must be prepared to face difficult moments, adding that the magnitude of a setback can sometimes be an indication of the magnitude of the rise that follows.

“The rise comes with its own challenges. I always tell people that you cannot aspire to be great if you are afraid of setbacks. What I have learnt over the period is, the bigger the challenge, the bigger the embarrassment, which means the bigger the rise,” he added.
