Minority Caucus set to meet over 'extortion' allegations - Report

The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, is set to meet members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Caucus over an extortion allegation levelled against him by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi.

According to a report by myjoyonline.com, the Minority Leader is expected to meet the caucus on Monday, August 24, 2026.

The report indicates that the allegations have not gone down well with some senior members of the caucus.

The meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for Afenyo-Markin to respond to the allegations and brief his colleagues on the matter.

The Chief Executive Officer of the GoldBod defended his decision to describe Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin as an “extortionist”, insisting that the comment was based on underlying issues between the two men that are not known to the public.

Speaking on Joy News’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, August 22, 2026, Gyamfi explained that he had never used the term against any of his other critics, suggesting that his choice of words was based on specific matters involving the Effutu MP.

“You see, my brother, there are many underlying issues between me and Afenyo-Markin that you don’t know, and those watching don’t know. I have appeared on Newsfile too many times. Perhaps in this country I have held more press conferences on political issues than anybody,” he said.

“Have you ever heard me use the word extortion against any of my critics? Have you ever heard me? Why would I use this word now? And why have you not heard Afenyo say anything about that, or challenge me, or threaten to sue? So, the NPP people talking; there are things you don’t know,” he added.
