This is common sense. We should have done this (Solar streetlights) many, many years ago. Unfortunately, we live a country where we do not sit to plan our national development but act on ad hoc basis. I ask the question is there any institution established to maintain the roads which are currently being built so they do deteriorate with potholes in the next few years? A major problem across Africa is the lack of foresight and planning but also ensuring that people do the work for which they are paid for every month.

It is time for African leaders to act with greater intelligence and foresight. The shift toward solar street lighting is a commendable step, but we can aim higher. Beyond installation, the government should establish a local manufacturing plant—or enter into a strategic partnership with a reputable firm—to produce these solar streetlights right here at home.

Setting up such a factory would cost less than $10 million, a modest investment compared to the long-term benefits. It would create jobs, reduce unemployment among our many qualified technical graduates, and most importantly, facilitate the transfer of technology to Africa. We can design products that meet our unique climate and infrastructure standards—not imports built for foreign conditions.

Development should not be reduced to cosmetic upgrades. Beautification is surface-level; true progress is industrial. Most advanced nations built their strength by producing what they consume, not by buying it from others. We need genuinely Ghana-made streetlights, not foreign imports that drain our foreign exchange or line the pockets of middlemen with supply contracts.

We have educated, skilled undergraduates and graduates across this nation, eager for opportunities. Let us put them to work—not just for show, but for the sustainable development of our country. God bless Ghana and Africa in general
