GoldBod Saga: 'You started the defamation' - Inusah Fuseini fires back at Afenyo-Markin

Former Tamale Central MP, Inusah Abdulai Bistav Fuseini, has hit back at Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, over his complaints about personal attacks in the GH¢22 billion GoldBod controversy, accusing him of starting the defamation with his earlier press conference.

Sharing his views on Good Morning Ghana on August 24, 2026, he said Afenyo-Markin should not be the first to complain about personal attacks because his own comments about GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi triggered what he described as a “defamation and counter-defamation” situation.

He further said that he had previously advised Afenyo-Markin, while they were both in Parliament, to avoid allowing emotions to influence his work as a parliamentarian and a leader.

“Afenyo-Markin should not be the first to say that there have been personal attacks. It should not be and I have constantly told him, I mean, when we were in Parliament together, that he should always try to take emotions out of his duties as a parliamentarian, and particularly as a leader because what emotions do, is that they cloud thinking,” he said.

According to him, Afenyo-Markin’s press conference on the alleged GH¢22 billion financial loss marked the beginning of the defamation.

“When I listened to his press conference on this $22 billion, I thought something was fundamentally wrong. If you are talking about defamation, the defamation and track of defamation started with that press conference,” he stated.

He said the Minority Leader appeared to have blamed Sammy Gyamfi for the alleged financial loss and went further to suggest that the GoldBod official had committed a crime.

“One, in that press conference, I was left in no doubt that the Minority Leader had fixed the blame for the 22 billion cedis on Sammy Gyamfi. I had no doubt about that. In fact, he had even gone ahead to say that Sammy Gyamfi was involved in a crime,” Fuseini explained.

He argued that labelling someone a criminal without first establishing that a crime had been committed was defamatory.

“That is an imputation of crime, and it's defamatory. It's actionable per se. You do not need to prove harm, so, probably I've got defamation and counter-defamation… no one has the right to label another person a criminal, without first establishing the crime that has been committed, and then reporting the matter to the police for investigation,” he stated.

Fuseini also criticised Afenyo-Markin for suggesting that Sammy Gyamfi could face difficult bail conditions if there was a change of government.

“To call him a criminal at a press conference, establish yourself as an investigative body, and come to the conclusion that in the event of a change of government, you cannot even contemplate how much bail conditions will be required, and whether Sammy Gyamfi will be able to meet those bail conditions, was irresponsible to say the least and probably, that's what brought about this whole counter narrative,” he said.

He called for a careful examination of the GH¢22 billion issue, urging politicians to focus on the facts rather than emotions.

“This conversation needs to be interrogated carefully, and as politicians we have to be honest with our interrogations. We have to understand the issues, examine the facts surrounding the matter, the reasoning behind all this hullabaloo, and then probably we can draw our own conclusions,” Fuseini stated.

'Minority leadership has been difficult' - Afenyo-Markin

He added that the matter should be discussed in a calm manner because of its potential impact on the country.

“Now, it is very important that when we are talking about matters that concern the nation, we do it in a dispassionate manner, because the amounts involved will affect all of us as citizens of this country. So, everybody should be interested and that was what aroused my interest,” he added.
