St Augustine’s College has been declared the winner of a dramatic 2026 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) One-Eighth-stage contest after Anlo SHS and Kumasi High School walked off the stage in protest over marks awarded to Augusco.
The controversial contest, held at the CNC Auditorium, ended without the final Riddles round after the two schools objected to what they described as an undue advantage given to St Augustine’s College through additional marks awarded during the competition.
The tension began in Round One when St Augustine’s College protested an answer concerning the meninges. At the time, Augusco and Kumasi High School were tied on 20 points, while Anlo SHS had 17 points.
The protest could not be addressed immediately because the organisers were unable to reach the consultant. Augusco, however, maintained its protest as the contest continued.
The organisers later reached the consultant, who ruled that St Augustine’s College deserved a partial mark for its response.
The Quiz Mistress explained that although Augusco had not provided the complete answer on the meninges, part of its response was correct and therefore merited one point.
The ruling moved Augusco from 20 to 21 points after Round One, putting them one point ahead of Kumasi High School, while Anlo SHS remained on 17 points.
The Quiz Mistress subsequently announced another one-point adjustment for Augusco arising from an oversight in the Problem of the Day involving options B and C.
The adjustment increased Augusco’s Problem of the Day score from 2/10 to 3/10. Anlo SHS scored 2/10, while Kumasi High School scored 1/10.

Augusco ended the round on 39 points, followed by Anlo SHS with 34 points and Kumasi High School with 27 points.
The contest, however, did not proceed to the final Riddles round.
As the schools prepared for the final stage, Anlo SHS walked off the stage in protest over the additional marks awarded to St Augustine’s College, which they believed had given Augusco an unfair advantage.
Kumasi High School subsequently followed suit, bringing the contest to an abrupt end.
With both competing schools off the stage, the Quiz Mistress eventually declared St Augustine’s College the winner, confirming the school’s qualification for the quarter-finals.
