Mercy Yaaba Bredu, a former Vice President of the Association of Students of English (ASSENS) at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) in 2024, has died in China after reportedly collapsing at the airport shortly after arriving from Ghana.
According to a report by MyJoyOnline.com on August 26, 2026, Mercy, a first-class student, travelled to China with plans to further her education and explore opportunities in the country.
The report said she left Ghana on Monday, August 24, 2026 and was seen off by friends and family members at the Accra International Airport before her departure.
Her flight reportedly departed at about 1:30 p.m.
During the journey, Mercy reportedly complained of heart pain. Shortly after arriving in China, she suddenly collapsed at the airport while receiving a bouquet of flowers.

She was subsequently rushed to a hospital for medical attention. However, despite efforts to save her, she died on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, just two days after leaving Ghana.
Her sudden death has left her family, friends, former colleagues and members of the ASSENS community in shock and grief.
