‘Foolishness’ – Amankwah-Mireku slams Harry Zakour over $100,000 claims

Former Accra Hearts of Oak captain Amankwah-Mireku has rebuffed claims by the club’s former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Harry Zakour that players received $100,000 each after clinching the 2000 CAF Champions League.

Zakour had stated that all 18 players in the squad were paid from about $3 million in proceeds generated from the club’s Champions League success, challenging any player who disputed his account to come forward.

In response, Amankwah-Mireku rejected the claims, stressing that no such payments were made as being suggested publicly by the ex-CEO.

He revealed that the squad was instead presented with $180, which left some of his teammates disappointed.

“I was in the room when Usmanu came in with $180 in his hands. He said, ‘This is the money we are sharing.’ And he was crying. Have you ever seen someone crying after being given money? Why? So I don’t know why the Millennium Chairman should come and make such claims,” he said.

Amankwah-Mireku further questioned Zakour’s motives, describing the comments as misleading and damaging.

“I don’t know what he was thinking at the time, or whether he has forgotten where he was sitting. It’s very unfortunate. This is not about Sporty TV or Sporty Radio,” he fumed in an interview with Sporty FM.

He labeled Zakour’s claims as lies and urged the public to disregard them.

“It is very unfortunate for him to pass that comment. And truly, something that is a lie can be foolishness. If somebody is lying, it’s foolishness. It’s very unfortunate for him to say that,” he added.
