Sammy Gyamfi 'chases' Afenyo-Markin for defamation suit

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, has instructed his lawyers to formally notify the High Court of their readiness to accept service of a writ filed against him by Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

The development follows Afenyo-Markin’s decision to sue Sammy Gyamfi over comments he considers false and defamatory, amid an escalating public dispute between the two over the operations of GoldBod and reported losses incurred by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).

In a letter addressed to the High Court, lawyers for Sammy Gyamfi, Ayine & Partners, said they had received express instructions and authority from their client to accept service of the writ and all accompanying court processes on his behalf.

The legal firm, in the letter dated August 26, 2026, said the writ could be served on Sammy Gyamfi through its chambers at House No. C809/29, 1st Close Lily Street, East Legon, Accra.

“We write to respectfully inform the Court that we have received the express instructions and authority of the 1st Defendant to accept service of the Writ of Summons issued by the Plaintiff, together with all accompanying processes, on his behalf in this matter,” the lawyers stated.

They further requested the court to update its records to reflect their authority to receive the documents.

“Accordingly, kindly take notice that service of the said Writ of Summons and any accompanying originating processes may be duly effected on the 1st Defendant...,” the letter added.

The move comes after Afenyo-Markin announced in Parliament on Monday, August 24, 2026, that he had commenced legal action against Sammy Gyamfi.

The Effutu MP’s lawsuit follows a public disagreement over scrutiny of GoldBod’s operations and concerns surrounding the reported US$1.7 billion loss recorded by the BoG in 2025 under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.

The disagreement became more heated after Sammy Gyamfi described the Minority Leader as an “extortionist” in response to Afenyo-Markin’s criticism of GoldBod and his demands for accountability regarding the programme.
