What to know about 34-year-old Sunyani West MP and wife of Mahama Ayariga

Millicent Amankwah Yeboah has carved out a place for herself in Ghana's political landscape as the Member of Parliament for Sunyani West in the Ninth Parliament at the age of 34 years.

However, beyond her role as a legislator, she is also the wife of former Majority Leader and Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga, a connection that recently drew public attention during her husband's ministerial vetting.

The young MP briefly found herself in the spotlight when she accompanied Ayariga to his vetting before Parliament's Appointments Committee on Thursday, August 27, 2026.

The exchange gave many Ghanaians an opportunity to learn more about the first-term legislator and her journey from the business world into national politics.

From business to Parliament

Millicent Amankwah Yeboah entered Parliament after winning the Sunyani West parliamentary seat on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the December 2024 general election.

She defeated the then-incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP, Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, to represent the constituency in the Ninth Parliament.

Amankwah Yeboah secured 26,828 votes, representing 57.64% of the total valid votes cast, while Baffour-Awuah obtained 19,715 votes, representing 42.36%. The People's National Convention's (PNC) candidate, Adongo Matilda, polled no votes.

Her victory marked a major transition from a career in business management and consultancy into frontline politics.

Before entering Parliament, she served as a branch manager for Verna Mineral Water and later became the Managing Director of MEA Connect Consultants.

Her academic journey includes studies at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana and the University of Law in the United Kingdom.

Finding her feet in Parliament

As a first-term MP, Amankwah Yeboah has taken on responsibilities beyond representing her constituents in the House.

She serves on parliamentary committees, including the Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions Committee, where she contributes to discussions on employment, labour and related matters.

Her political journey has also placed her in a relatively unique position, as she serves in the same Parliament as her husband.

Mahama Ayariga, the MP for Bawku Central, has served as a legislator for several years and has held a number of political and ministerial positions.

The couple's presence in Parliament means they are not only partners at home but also colleagues within Ghana's legislature.

The moment that brought her into the spotlight

Amankwah Yeboah attracted wider public attention on Thursday, August 27, 2026, when she accompanied her husband to his ministerial vetting.

During the proceedings, the Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, introduced members of Ayariga's family who were present.

However, after mentioning Ayariga's father-in-law, Ahiafor initially did not introduce his wife.

Ayariga quickly drew the committee's attention to the omission.

"Mr Chairman, you have introduced the father-in-law, but you haven't introduced the daughter," he said.

Ahiafor subsequently introduced her as "Hon Mrs Ayariga, formerly known as Hon Millicent Yeboah-Amankwah", identifying her as the Member of Parliament for Sunyani West.

The light-hearted exchange briefly placed the young legislator at the centre of public attention, not because of a parliamentary debate or political controversy, but because of her connection to another prominent figure in the House.

Yet, her political journey stands on its own.

At 34, Millicent Amankwah Yeboah is part of a younger generation of legislators making their mark in Ghana's political space while bringing experience from careers outside politics.
