‘Some officials give drug dealers tip-offs ahead of raids’ - Female convict alleges

A female convict serving her jail sentence has alleged that some Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) officials provide drug dealers with information about planned raids to help them escape arrest.

She made the allegation while recounting how she was arrested during a raid in Takoradi on December 26, 2014.

“There are times where some of the Narcotics officials provide intel to the drug peddlers (pushers) about their raid just so we can escape. Some of the pushers pay these officials,” she alleged.

The convict said she was attending an event during the Christmas season when the team from arrived to conduct the raid.

She said information about the raid reached the drug dealers, allowing her and others at the location to escape.

“During the Christmas season, there are lots of events that goes on so there was this particular event which I attended. The NACOC team came there and conducted a raid,” she said.

According to her, she initially escaped with others after receiving the information but later returned to the area, where she was arrested.

“When we got the intel, we escaped the ghetto, but I decided to go back afterwards, where I was caught,” she stated.

She said her arrest came at a time when she was also struggling with drug use and wanted to quit.

“I wanted to quit the drugs because at a point, I always got caught on my criminal operations,” she added.

The female convict also recounted how her drug habit was linked to her involvement in stealing from homes.

She said she was part of a gang of girls who broke into homes and stole items such as laptops and phones, which they sold to buyers.

“We were a gang of girls that used to break into people’s homes, and that practice taught me how to steal. No matter how tall your fence wall is, I will jump over it and break into your home to steal whatever I find, whether laptops or phones,” she recounted.

She said the proceeds from her criminal activities were used mainly to obtain cocaine from her drug supplier.

“When he gives me the drugs, I give him the proceeds from my criminal operations, and in turn, he gives me my portion. I don’t use the money on food but on cocaine,” she stated.
