As for the salaries and conditions of service of teachers, it is sad to comment on it because it will just degrade my hardworking colleagues who are already in the service. How can one teach for 21 years on Director scale with a take-home salary of GH 5600? Living in Accra, my rent alone is GH 600 monthly, minimum of GH 300 daily as housekeeping money, utilities GH 1200 monthly, fees for the kids GH 5500 termly (every four months), T&T— the list goes on and on.... How can one survive with this salary, even living a bare minimum life?

But you crossed the line by referencing that the union leaders are always in the pockets of the government. It’s one thing saying that someone reneged on his/her duties, and a whole different thing accusing the person of failing because the person was taking bribes. This is a serious allegation of crime. Nana do you have solid provable evidence?
By the way Journalists and Teachers as individual institutions, which of them are more in the pockets of governments. I wish you could treat this as the basis of your debate, NOT SALARIES.
I applaud you for your concern for teachers but please don’t accuse anybody wrongly. Teachers are very hardworking. I once visited an elementary school teacher’s cocoa farm in the early ‘80s. I can assure you that that teacher can manage to buy a good car for himself. And such a person one may wrongly accuse him of being in the pocket of a government.
So if the union leaders did not function strongly I am with you. But it would be far fetched to claim that they were in the pockets of governments.
