I told my fellow students that General Akuffo's government will not last and if care is not taken he himself and some other top military officers will be killed.
Fred Akuffo gave the chance to the junior military officers to state the coup that led to him and other senior officer, not excluding retired ones being shot.

Akuffo never gave the chance to no one. Acheampong was his own enemy, and if Rawlings didn't happen, others will. Acheampong was seriously hated by the junior ranks, not only because of corruption, but also jumping grades from Colonel to General which became very unpopular with the ranks.

Akuffo's grievous mistake is to steal a lot of packs of the newly ordered 50 Cedis notes Acheampong ordered earlier that were sitting at the Tema Port when he caused to deliver the money to the Central Bank (This got Rawlings to retrieve the 50 Cedis notes, since they didn't know how much got into circulation, despite BoG furnishing the AFRC) with the serials of the cash that was lost).

When the junior ranks got wind of the theft, they decided to do everything to intervene before the money got into circulation. Note that they were already very furious with what the Lebanese and Indians were doing to the economy. They believed Akuffo's intervention was to retrieve the country.
It was remarkable some of the money was retrieved from the homes of Akuffo and Odarte-Wellington.
