  This is indeed good news. Telecel completing 1,890 new cell sites with a target of 2,698 by year-end is a significant step forward for connectivity in Ghana .
  
  But honestly, I have to ask: wasn't this the same company that used to be Ghana Telecom—the one that once covered the nation before privatization? In 1996, Ghana Telecom was privatised when Telekom Malaysia took a 30% stake with management control . Now we're celebrating them building what we once had. That raises questions.
  
  There is also the issue of accountability. The Minister mentioned that fibre cuts remain a huge challenge—road construction causes 49% of these cuts, and illegal mining accounts for another 25% . The government is talking about penalties and a "Dig Once" policy. That'll be a great one. I remember clearly: in my community, streetlights were installed before a road contract, and after the road works, they never came back on. No one cared .
  
  Perhaps this is why we need to look beyond our borders for expertise. Countries like Rwanda have brought in international talent and are benefiting . Maybe we should advertise positions internationally, let Ghanaians apply, but have an independent body hire for government based on competence. And if a Ghanaian qualifies, give them clear goals and let them perform.
  
  Also, contractors who damage fibre cables or other utilities must be surcharged. The streetlights in my community remain off, and no one is held accountable. We can build, but if we don't protect what we build, we will always be chasing what we once had.

  Kwame, I do share your frustrations and it looks as if our policy makers have never taken the concerns of us citizens serious. They do that ONLY when it benefits them.

It's as if voting is an insult. I sometimes wonder if we really were in school together. It's mind boggling!
