‘People remember your last result, not your style’ – Henry Asante defends Carlos Queiroz

Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Henry Asante Twum has defended the decision to retain Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars, insisting that results matter more than an attractive style of play.

The GFA recently confirmed that the experienced Portuguese tactician will remain in charge as Ghana begin their quest to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Speaking on Asempa FM, Asante Twum argued that football is ultimately judged by outcomes rather than aesthetics.

“People will remember you for your last result and not your style, so for me, getting results is more important than playing stylish football,” he said.

He maintained that success should always take precedence over entertaining football, particularly when attacking approaches fail to deliver victories.

“For me, if you play attractive attacking football and you lose 5-0, and you play a defensive, boring style but win 1-0, take your three points and win a trophy, which is better?” he asked.

“So the results are always important.”

Queiroz was appointed following the dismissal of Otto Addo after a difficult spell in charge and was tasked with leading Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Under the 73-year-old, the Black Stars advanced from the group stage before their campaign ended with a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32.

His retention comes as Ghana seek to rebuild after failing to qualify for the previous Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, a setback that intensified scrutiny of the national team.

The Black Stars now face a challenging start to their AFCON qualifying campaign. Ghana travel to Bouake to take on Côte d’Ivoire at the Stade de la Paix on 24 September before hosting The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium three days later.

With qualification for the 2027 tournament the immediate target, the GFA will be hoping Queiroz can guide the four-time African champions back to the continental showpiece and avoid another disappointing campaign.
