Oh, the usual recipe: laziness, incompetence, lack of creativity, and a system that somehow always seems to work best for a select, connected few.

Why must everything be centralized and controlled as though ordinary people cannot be trusted to make decisions for themselves? This obsession with power and control has produced a computerized selection system that takes away choice, creates unnecessary frustration, and does little to demonstrate genuine innovation.

Let every school select its students based on academic performance, available spaces, admission criteria, and—most importantly—the preferences of prospective students. That is how the system worked before this overly centralized computer-selection arrangement.

And yes, it can still be completely digital.

Schools can submit their selections electronically, and the government can simply cross-check the final selections against WAEC results and other relevant records. That provides verification, auditing, transparency, and accountability without having a computer arbitrarily decide where a student should go.

This is not some impossible technological challenge. Any competent database administrator or systems architect knows this can be designed and implemented. Start small. Evaluate it. Identify problems. Improve it. Measure the outcomes. Scale it up. That is what competent system management looks like.

Look at countries such as the US, Canada, and the UK. They use sophisticated technology in education, but computers do not simply dictate which school a student must attend. Technology is supposed to make systems more efficient and transparent—not become an excuse to centralize power and remove human choice.

So what exactly are we trying to achieve with this system? Efficiency? Transparency? Better educational outcomes? Or simply more control?

Because if the goal is genuinely to improve education, then we should be encouraging innovation, choice, accountability, and competition—not building increasingly complicated systems that take decisions away from schools, parents, and students.

This is not innovation. It is centralized control dressed up as technology.

And once again, the biggest problem is not the computer. It is the lack of creativity and willingness to rethink a broken system.
