MP calls for one Category A senior high school in every MMDA

The Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, has called for the upgrading of at least one senior high school in each of Ghana’s 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to Category A status.

He believes the move would help address the intense competition for placements in some of the country’s most prestigious senior high schools and reduce the pressure on the Computerised School Selection and Placement System.

In a Facebook post on September 8, 2026, Osei Nyarko said each selected school should be equipped with quality teaching staff and facilities comparable to leading institutions such as Achimota School, PRESEC, Mfantsipim, Adisadel College, Wesley Girls’ High School and Prempeh College.

“I think it’s time for the country to at least upgrade one secondary school in each of the 261 MMDAs to a first-class Category A school with quality teaching staff to the level of Achimota’s, PRESEC, Mfantsipim, Adisadel, Wesley Girls, Prempeh’s, etc.,” he stated.

According to him, such an approach would give students seeking Category A schools the opportunity to remain within their respective districts instead of competing for limited spaces in prestigious schools across the country.

Osei Nyarko also suggested that Ghana could draw lessons from aspects of the public-school system in the United States, where access to public schools is generally tied to a student’s residential area.

“Let’s begin to implement those best practices elsewhere like in the US,” he said.

He argued that restricting public-school placements largely to students within a district or locality could encourage local authorities to invest more in improving the capacity and conditions of schools in their jurisdictions.

Osei Nyarko proposed that parents who wish to send their children to schools outside their districts should consider private schools and bear the associated costs.

He believes the approach could make the placement process fairer, strengthen schools across the country and ease the pressure on parents and the state during the annual SHS placement exercise.
