In Italy (and all EU countries) , people pay customs duty on EVERY NEW ITEM originating from non-EU country, even if it is only ONE item. Whoever attempts to dodge and is caught, may regret their action because the customs are very strict on that.

Apart from generating income for the nation, charging high import duties causes people to acquire 'local' products from within EU with the direct that local production companies survive.

I sent just a book to a friend in Greece recently and paid every duty plus insurance in Ghana but when the book got to Greece he was charged 7.50 euros for "Customs Duty" before releasing the book. Is he not aware in Europe you can not carry more than two mobile phones on you and if customs find out you have to pay tax on them on the extra phones??
