President Mahama makes clear stance on National Cathedral project

President John Dramani Mahama has clearly stated his position on the continuation of the National Cathedral project he inherited from the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration.

Speaking at a recent event, the President noted that, even though he had made a commitment to continue projects left behind by the previous administration, the National Cathedral project was different.

He explained that his commitment was to continue all national projects the previous government left behind, but the National Cathedral project was a personal pledge to God made by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, rather than a national project.

“I made a promise that every policy I inherited, I would continue it as long as it's in the interest of the people. The National Cathedral... was not a national policy. It was a personal pledge by the former President,” President Mahama explained his reservations about continuing the National Cathedral project in its current state, including its current location and the use of taxpayer funds to complete it.

“I made a promise that every policy and every project that I inherit, I will continue it as long as it's in the interest of the people, and I have largely done that. Almost all the projects and policies we inherited, we have continued.

“The only one is the National Cathedral, but that was not a national policy. It was a personal pledge by the former President. It was a personal pledge by the former President to God. So that one, it wasn't national policy,” he added.

The President, however, welcomed the move by the Christian Council of Ghana to evaluate the construction of the cathedral.

He added that, as a Christian, he supports the construction of a cathedral for the country, but he does not support the use of state funds for it, nor does he support its current location.

Christian Council forms committee to determine future of National Cathedral

“But I read about the Christian Council. The Christian Council was meeting with various Christian groups to see how the National Cathedral Project can be looked at again. I am a Christian myself. I have nothing against having a national cathedral.

“But my principle has always been that the location has been a problem. That place, we have Parliament there, we have the International Conference Centre there, we have Greater Accra Regional Hospital there, we have so many things there… we have the stadium not far, and that's the way we used to go to Black Star Square. So if you go and put this major thing there again, it will constrict that whole area. You even have the National Theatre just close by,” he added.
