Demolitions have begun at Laboma Beach as authorities pull down illegal structures erected along the coastline as part of ongoing post-flood mitigation measures.

The exercise follows a 21-day ultimatum issued in early August by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council, in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), for owners of structures in the Laboma Beach area to vacate the site.

The directive was issued as part of efforts to clear areas considered vulnerable to flooding and other environmental hazards, particularly structures located along waterways and the coastline.

With the deadline now expired, authorities have commenced the demolition exercise to clear the area of the structures.

Footage from the exercise shows personnel moving into the area as structures are pulled down and the affected portions of the coastline are cleared.

The demolition forms part of broader measures by authorities to address activities and developments considered to be contributing to flooding and other environmental risks in parts of the Greater Accra Region.

The Laboma Beach exercise is also expected to help restore some of the affected areas and improve the management of the coastal environment.

The operation is ongoing, with authorities continuing to clear structures identified for removal.
