Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has dismissed claims that he is refusing to release funds to ministers to enable them to execute their mandates.

He said government spending must be guided by available resources, stressing that he would not resort to borrowing simply to finance government activities.

“I can only spend what I have. You have given me a job to do, to collect money and disburse for work. If there is no money, you don’t expect me to borrow like Ofori-Atta did. Is that what we want? Where is the money to pay back after borrowing?” he said.

Speaking on Anopa Ahenfie on September 14, 2026, Dr Forson said the country must learn to live within its means and prioritise spending on essential services.

“It’s high time we live within our means. If the money is not there, we must spend within our means,” he stated.

He said government was prioritising critical areas such as education, healthcare and infrastructure, including the provision of teachers, nurses and doctors.

“We are spending on what is necessary,” Dr Forson said.
