Nurse remanded for two weeks over alleged ties with 'Ghana Jollof' account

Salomey Bafoh Awiti, a 40-year-old nurse from Techiman in the Bono East Region, who was reportedly arrested in connection with an anonymous social media account known as “Ghana Jollof”, has been remanded into custody for two weeks by the Adenta Complex Court.

She pleaded not guilty to a charge of abetment of crime, specifically the publication of false news.

According to Enoch Afoakwah, a legal representative who spoke to the media after the proceedings, the presiding judge ordered the remand on national security grounds as police investigations into the matter continue.

“The judge says she’s not inclined to grant bail because the facts border on national security, and the accused has been charged with a misdemeanour. The charge is abetment of crime through the publication of false news, so she is not even the principal person,” he said.

“If bail is granted, and she has denied the charge, pleading not guilty. Why do we still hold her? She has been in custody for five days now since Saturday at 11 p.m. This is highly unfair to the liberty of the accused person. Highly, highly unfair, and I believe that well-meaning citizens of this land must speak on these matters because it is becoming one too many,” he added.

Awiti, a registered nurse based at a hospital in Techiman in the Bono East Region, appeared before the court on Thursday, September 17, 2026.

She was taken into custody by individuals identifying themselves as security operatives during a midnight operation at her residence in Hansua, near Techiman, on Sunday, September 13, 2026.

Family members said three people – two men and a woman dressed in black uniforms – arrived at the home between 11:00 p.m. and midnight, informed them that they were from National Security and took Awiti away.

Relatives said they were not provided with clear details of the allegations at the time and were initially unable to locate her after making enquiries at police and security offices.

Awiti reportedly works as a senior nursing officer in charge of the Emergency Ward at the Abrafi Women and Children’s Hospital in Techiman.

Her family has strongly denied any connection to the “Ghana Jollof” account, which has gained attention for critical commentary directed at President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama.

Family spokesperson Abraham Owusu Ansah and other relatives have described the allegations as a case of mistaken identity, saying Awiti has no involvement in political social media content.

Legal representatives, including Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, have characterised the arrest and continued detention as unlawful.

They said authorities presented brief facts to the court alleging that Awiti conspired with the anonymous “Ghana Jollof” account to plan a coup aimed at removing the President from office.

The lawyer rejected the claims, emphasising that Awiti is a nurse serving her community and that the accusations lack foundation.

Following proceedings at the Adenta Complex Court on Thursday, lawyers for Awiti expressed concern after she was remanded into custody for two weeks.

They indicated that authorities appear to be holding her while efforts continue to identify the person behind the “Ghana Jollof” account.

The family has appealed to National Security authorities and President Mahama for her immediate release if no offence is established against her.
