At Accra railway station, there were only three lines (only one was actually active) and I was used to crossing them at will. So I thought I could do the same in Europe.

The first ever time, I changed trains in Europe, I almost crossed a railway line: I asked someone where I could board the train indicated on my ticket. It was Platform 8 and I was standing on Platform 2.
As I got ready to jump into the lane, one of two uniformed men yelled at me and prompted me to follow them. Long story short: I was fined 20 DM. I still have the pink receipt they issued to me.

I did not even know that there was a long tunnel that connects to every platform. So from Platform 2, I should have used a staircase (or a lift, if any) down into the tunnel, walk straight to the staircase that would take me to Platform 8 !!

It is sad and unfortunate but that is the manifestation of our level of indiscipline. Those countries have clearly demarcated road and rail crossings. He thought he was in Ghana where people misbehave on the road and expect drivers to rather behave. You're gone. Indiscipline has sent you parking from earth too early. Lessons for the living.

I can attest to this: such waiting can be boring and 'annoying' but those rail-crossing were constructed for nothing.
There's one particular crossing in Bonn, where you may wait up to about 8 minutes, because more than 1 train cross from different directions at some. Because it is practically impossible for the crossing to be closed, opened, close, opened ...., they designed it close then wait for all the trains expected the next 6-8 minutes to pass and finally opened.

In countries where tram and train services are abundant such cases are not isolated. Especially in the country side, fatal accidents at rail-crossing involving vehicles are not uncommon.

Some use there as sure way of committing suicide. One of my friends and course mate (a white guy RIP A.) ended his life that way.

In the Nederlands, it's not easy to be hit by a train unless one intentionally or accidentally jumps onto the rail track while standing on the train station platform. It hardly occurs that the train hit someone, not even vehicles because rail traffic works perfectly along the crossings.

Once a while, you hear a train had crushed a vehicle in a remote (village) area due to sensor failure or negligence/arrogance of an impatient driver and not human being unless that human has consciously or out of mental issues given himself to the train to be crushed.

This latest one is sad and I must believe he was hit by a tram and not train.
