Why didn’t she show her ID? - NPP communicator questions EOCO arrest process

NPP communication team member Lawuratu Musah-Saaka has questioned why the woman who attempted to take Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) did not show identification when he asked her to prove that she was an official.

Speaking on TV3’s New Day, Ms Musah-Saaka said the MP had initially indicated that he was willing to go with the officials in his own vehicle.

She said the situation changed when the officials allegedly resisted that option and blocked Mr Awuah’s vehicle.

“He first go like, okay, I’ll follow you in my car. They are resistant. Now they come and block you in front of your car,” she said.

Ms Musah-Saaka said Mr Awuah then asked what showed that the woman was an EOCO official and argued that the question was reasonable under the circumstances.

“The question the MP asked was, what shows you are from EOCO? What prevented them from showing their ID?” she said.

She said the inability to establish the woman’s identity created a situation in which the MP could not simply be expected to get into another vehicle.

“So if you can’t prove to me that you are the right official to take me to a state institution, I have to defend myself,” she said.

Ms Musah-Saaka also said EOCO’s executive secretary should explain why the official did not produce identification, arguing that the issue was covered by the agency’s legal framework and regulations.

“That’s the question the executive secretary has to answer. Because it’s enshrined in their acts and in their regulations,” she said.
