Education Ministry to meet teacher unions over strike on Monday

The Ministry of Education is set to meet teacher unions on Monday, September 28, as efforts intensify to resolve a nationwide strike over unpaid promotion arrears and other outstanding demands.

The meeting is expected to bring together relevant stakeholders to find a solution to the dispute and prevent the industrial action from disrupting the academic calendar.

Press Secretary and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, Hashmin Mohammed, disclosed this during an interview on Joy FM’s Midday News on Friday, September 25, 2026.

According to him, the Education Minister will engage the unions as well as institutions involved in the payment and negotiation processes.

“I’ve just had information from the Honourable Minister that we intend to meet them on Monday to pursue them to call off the strike,” he said.

Mohammed explained that the issue could not be resolved by the Education Ministry alone, as the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department also had roles to play.

He said Monday’s meeting would therefore provide an opportunity for the unions and relevant institutions to engage directly and work towards addressing the outstanding concerns.

The Ministry, he added, was “deeply worried” about the strike, particularly because of its potential impact on the academic calendar.

Mohammed said considerable effort had gone into restoring stability to the academic calendar following previous disruptions.

“It took the Honourable Minister and then that of the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service to be able to restore sanity to the academic calendar,” he said.

“For the first time, we are having our Ghanaian school children from KG to university all reporting in this September. So that tells you that we have been able to reverse the academic calendar,” he added.

He cautioned that a prolonged strike could affect the progress made in getting students back on schedule, particularly as schools have only recently resumed.

The teacher unions declared the nationwide strike over unpaid promotion arrears and what they described as delays in negotiations with the government.

Mohammed said the Education Ministry remained committed to working with all relevant parties to address the concerns raised by the unions.

He said the government would use Monday’s engagement to seek a resolution and bring the industrial action to an end before it causes further disruption to teaching and learning.
