La Beach is indeed an important economic and tourism centre, and the livelihoods of the people operating there deserve protection. But rebuilding an economy after livelihoods and businesses have been disrupted is not just about making promises during an election season. It is also about demonstrating a record of protecting livelihoods and managing the wider economy effectively.

Dr. Bawumia served as Vice President from 2017 to 2025 as part of the government whose tenure ended with Ghana facing a severe economic and financial crisis. The IMF records that Ghana entered an acute crisis in 2022, with inflation reaching about 54%, severe cedi depreciation, loss of international market access and the suspension of most external debt servicing.

The IMF also records that Ghana subsequently had to undertake domestic and external debt restructuring as part of the effort to restore debt sustainability.

So when Dr. Bawumia now says he will rebuild the La Beach economy, Ghanaians are entitled to ask: **What lessons have been learnt from the economic difficulties experienced under the administration in which he was a leading member? What safeguards will prevent another cycle of promises, borrowing, economic hardship and then another attempt at reconstruction?**

La Beach deserves more than political promises. The traders, artisans, fishermen, food vendors, tourism operators and other businesses there deserve a sustainable economic plan, secure tenure, proper infrastructure, environmental protection and meaningful participation in decisions affecting their livelihoods.

A credible plan should therefore be judged not only by what is promised for La Beach tomorrow, but also by the economic record and policy lessons of yesterday.

**Ghanaians should look at both the promise and the record before making their own judgment.**

Besides, citizens should enjoy the beach without paying for it. The beach is a public good and it belongs to all of us. No individual should monopolize access to the beach and demand payment for a walk along the beach.
