Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) vice-president George Afriyie has questioned the need for a committee to search for a new Black Stars head coach.

According to Afriyie, Ghana should already have a clear idea of the type of coach it wants and should have conducted the necessary background checks before making an appointment.

He cited France, Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire as examples of countries that, in his view, moved quickly to appoint coaches they believed were suitable for their national teams.

“Personally, I think that there was no need for the formation of a committee at this level,” Afriyie said.

He argued that France knew the coach they wanted after parting ways with their previous manager, while Senegal opted for former France international Patrick Vieira because they believed he could improve the team.

Afriyie also pointed to Côte d’Ivoire, saying the country acted quickly when it identified Hervé Renard as a suitable candidate.

He, however, defended the Minister of Sports and Recreation, saying the responsibility for appointing the Black Stars coach ultimately lies with the GFA.

“I don't blame the Minister. The problem is not the Minister's problem, the problem is GFA's problem. It is the duty of the GFA to get the coach,” he said.

Afriyie further rejected suggestions that the Ministry was deeply involved in the process, arguing that the names on the committee do not necessarily represent the Ministry.

He specifically mentioned Agbese, who he said has been involved with the GFA for several years and currently serves as chairman of the GFA Appeals Committee.

“Show me one person that is a Ministry representative,” Afriyie challenged.
