A woman has reportedly lost GH¢6,700 in an alleged mobile money (MoMo) fraud after a caller deceived her with a fake cash prize offer and persuaded her to pay money upfront to claim her supposed winnings.
According to the account provided, the woman received a phone call from an individual who claimed she had won a substantial cash prize of GH¢6,700. The caller allegedly told her she had to make an upfront payment before she could access the money.
Believing the offer was genuine, the woman reportedly followed the caller’s instructions and visited a mobile money vendor to complete the transaction.
She subsequently deposited GH¢6,700 into a MoMo account provided by the alleged fraudster, apparently in an attempt to claim the promised prize.
The transaction reportedly left her out of pocket, with the incident serving as another warning about the risks associated with unsolicited prize offers and requests for advance payments.
Mobile money users are advised to verify suspicious calls and prize announcements through official channels and avoid transferring money to unknown accounts to claim winnings. Any suspected fraud should be reported promptly to the relevant mobile money service provider and the police.
However, details about when and where the alleged fraud occurred, the identity of the recipient and whether a formal complaint has been lodged were not provided.
