The headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Zakaria Abdulai, has resigned as Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Juaben Constituency and withdrawn from the party’s upcoming constituency chairmanship elections, citing the need to focus on clearing his name over allegations of sexual abuse involving female students.

In a letter dated October 20, 2026, and addressed to the NDC General Secretary, Abdulai said his resignation and withdrawal from the constituency elections took immediate effect.

He explained that he intended to dedicate his time and resources to pursuing lawful means to defend himself against the allegations.

“At this time, I intend to devote my attention and resources to pursuing all lawful avenues to clear my name and vindicate my position. I remain hopeful that, once these matters are resolved, I will be able to return to active political engagement and continue contributing to the ideals and aspirations of the NDC,” he stated.

The decision comes amid public concern over allegations that Abdulai sexually abused more than 14 female students at the school. The claims have triggered calls for accountability and a thorough investigation into the matter.

Abdulai maintains innocence

Despite the allegations, Abdulai has maintained his innocence and expressed appreciation to friends, relatives and supporters who have continued to stand by him.

“I wish to express my profound gratitude to my friends, relatives, and all well-wishers who have stood by me and maintained their faith in my innocence in the face of the allegations levelled against me and my office,” he said.

He also thanked the NDC for the opportunity to serve the party and contribute to its growth and development.

Abdulai, however, did not disclose the specific legal steps he intends to take to clear his name or indicate when he expects the matter to be resolved.

The letter was copied to the NDC National Chairman and the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman.

NAGRAT calls for action

The controversy has also drawn a response from the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), which has called for the removal of Abdulai and Ghana Education Service (GES) officials in Obuasi over their alleged handling of complaints relating to the case.

NAGRAT President Jacob Anaba has claimed that concerns about the alleged misconduct were raised before the matter became public, raising questions about how the relevant education authorities responded to the complaints.

The calls for action have intensified public scrutiny of the school’s management and the response of education authorities to the allegations.

The allegations against Abdulai remain subject to investigation, and no conclusion on his culpability should be drawn before the relevant processes are completed.
